Today we spayed and neutered 548 cats and dogs. We are ecstatic. Unfortunately, we had to turn away almost 200 people, which was super hard for us. We never like to turn people away. That said, the reality is that we can only do so much in a day’s time. We hope everyone that wasn’t able to come today, will be able to come tomorrow! We are planning for a big finish to the week and the clinic!
Our team was amazing today. We have been working long hours on our feet, and, usually, by day 5 our bodies are feeling the wear and tear. Our team pushed through everything today with a smile on their faces and a positive attitude. Go Team!
Stay tuned for tomorrow!
Well, today was another one for the books. We safely spayed and neutered 539 dogs and cats total! That’s a new record! We also spayed and neutered 186 cats today! A HUGE record number of cats! Today was the smoothest running day and we couldn’t be happier. We have now safely spayed and neutered 2044 cats and dogs over the last 4 days.
On another note, one of our volunteers received a generous donation today to help her lovely large-breed dog walk again! Her gentle handsome man is very weak in his back legs and cannot walk without dragging his hind end. Due to his tremendous will and amazing personality, he has been dragging himself along in order to get around. Today, he received wheelchair will help him to move around without constant wounds on his back legs and having to drag himself! To see this hard-working volunteer as she watched her handsome boy walk, was heart-warming.
Now time for dinner and bed!
We broke records! Today we broke our overall record, as well as our record for dogs spayed/neutered in one day. Our team had a long day, but it was certainly a successful one. We have now averaged 500 cats and dogs safely spayed/neutered per day. We are looking forward to a nice night of sleep before day number 4!
Image above is a group of our entire medical team (52 people, which is largest group we have ever recruited).
We are moving! It’s 1pm and we have safely spayed/neutered 80 cats, and 200 dogs. Our team is amazing! We also wouldn’t be here without the amazing planning, coordination, and support from The Humane Society of the United States. Furthermore, our dedicated local volunteers have been priceless. It takes a village to put on a clinic of this magnitude and caliber. We are so excited to be a part of this coalition and make history with a high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter clinic/coalition like this! Let’s keep it up! Stay tuned.
494 dogs and cats safely spayed/neutered yesterday! That’s a new ViDAS RECORD for total number of pets spay/neutered in one day! We also beat our previous record of dogs spayed/neutered in one day, which today was 348 (previously the record was 343). We beat it by 5 dogs! Woohoo! Our team is now got the flow and rolling smoothly now! Looking forward to tomorrow, but first some delicious creamy pasta for dinner!
It’s Day 2! Today we were able to get started and rolling much more quickly. We had the first surgery starting around 8:30 am. That’s a significantly earlier start time from yesterday. Thank goodness! The team is doing a great job at keeping a good pace. We have currently had 175 dogs and 80 cats spayed/neutered! That’s fantastic. Let’s go team!
476 dogs and cats, safely spayed/neutered today! We would call that a success. What a day! Well worth the sore feet, swollen ankles, and tiredness! It is so amazing to be able to be working with the Puerto Rican community again! Thanks to the Humane Society of the United States for coordinating such a wonderful coalition. Now off to bed for a good night’s rest and an early start to Day 2. Stay tuned for updates!
Whew! We started pretty slow this morning. As always, getting into the flow of things can be a little tough. We have spayed/neutered about 185 dogs and about 70 cats, with no complications so far. Thanks to all of the amazing volunteers and our amazing medical team, we are flowing now! Check back soon for the next update as we progress through the day!
Image above is the medical teams meeting this morning and getting ready! See our amazing set-up, how nice is that?
Set-Up – Day 0
Set-Up for #Spayathon4PR began today! We have an AMAZING location. We are located at the Coliseo Manuel Petaca Iguina in Arécibo, Puerto Rico. We have so much space at our location for our 52 person medical team, we couldn’t be more excited! This is our largest team we have ever put together for a high-quality, high-volume spay and neuter clinic. We set-up everything today with only a few issues along the way…we are having a little power supply issue; but, don’t worry! Everything will be fine! Now time for dinner and a nice, restful, sleep before we have an early start tomorrow for Day 1!
Here’s a video from set-up today!
